Entrepreneurs’ Organization pledges to tackle the Sustainable Development Goals at the SDG Media Zone 72nd United Nations General Assembly in New York City
September 26th, 2017
On September 18th Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO), the world’s leading peer-to-peer network of successful business leaders announced its pledge to support the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that include 17 goals and 169 targets to eradicate poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change by 2030. EO’s pledge to support the SDGs further bolsters its commitment to social entrepreneurship and will encourage a stronger call-to-action among its global community of entrepreneurs.
An initiative driven by EO’s New York chapter, the pledge was announced at a commemorative event held at the UN General Assembly’s SDG Media Zone during the 72nd session of the General Assembly. The evening witnessed a confluence of dignitaries and over 50 EO members from Brazil, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, UAE, Bangladesh and the USA.
Stephen Distante, President, EO New York Chapter comments: ““This is the first step of many positive things to come and is the result of immense hard work put in by our Chapter Patron, Sergio Fernandez de Cordova. EO celebrates 30 years this year, and we believe supporting the UN’s SDGs will bring us closer together as a global organization committed towards changing the world for the better. The EO New York board has chosen SDG #4, ‘Quality Education,’ as a commitment to another of EO’s values, ‘Thirst For Learning,’ to provide a community of education for our members to learn and grow, in order to serve the SDGs in a more significant way.”
“Cross-sector collaboration and inclusion is essential for the SDGs to be realized”, said William Kennedy, Officer-in-Charge, United Nations Office for Partnerships. “The 17 SDGs not only represent an inspired vision and consensus of 193 UN Member States. They also provide a framework and roadmap to guide entrepreneurs everywhere, as they seek to define the values and higher purpose of their companies in contributing to sustainability and societal well-being. The commitment of EO and its global network of entrepreneurs to support the SDGs represents a tremendous example of business leadership in action and is very much welcomed.”
During the week of 18th to 22nd September, the SDG Media Zone hosted live broadcast of interviews, panel discussions and other digital content, to engage people all around the world in the important conversations happening at the UN General Assembly. Each day, the SDG Media Zone set the scene for conversations with prominent officials and experts on a broad range of topics including the role of sustainable development in preventing conflict, promoting gender equality, addressing climate change, engaging youth and partnerships.
